FAQs

Do you take donated dogs?

No, all of the dogs in the Canine Unit are purchased from a breeder that specializes in dogs with good temperaments and  strong prey drives.

If you are looking for a home for your dog or you are interested in learning more about dogs in need of a home, please check the PETFINDER website. This site allows you to learn more about shelters in  your area.

Where do the dogs live?

The dogs live with their handlers and their families and go home with them each day. Upon retiring, the dogs continue to live with their handlers.

How long are the dogs in training?

Ramsey County Sheriff Canine Unit deputies and their dogs train for 13 weeks before they begin working. They also receive monthly training to maintain their training and skills.

Graduation ceremonies take place every. Please check our EVENTS section for the next graduation.

Why do you only use male dogs?

Female dogs can be very protective are less likely to leave their handler. Male dogs are more likely to travel further from their partners and this trait is necessary when tracking a suspect.
