Bringing the Trophy Home to Minnesota:
History of the Tim Jones Memorial Award

In one tragic incident, the Saint Paul Minnesota Police Department lost two officers and a canine. Officer Ron Ryan Jr. and Tim Jones and his canine, Lazer all were murdered on August 26, 1994. The Tim Jones Memorial Award is an effort to preserve the memory of not only those brave officers, but also the K9s who work the streets to make them safer. It is for the top scoring department team in these national trials.

The RCSO team took first place at the U.S. Police Canine Association’s national field trials in Lakeland, Florida in October, 2007.

Members of the team that competed include:

Deputy Lisa Daly and K9 Phoenix
Deputy Gary Pearl and K9 Gus
Officer Russ Garvey and K9 Rico
Deputy Steve Olson and K9 Gauner

Deputy Chris Moe and K9 Jett

In addition to this honor, the following received special distinction:

  • Deputy Gary Pearl and K9 Gus – placed 13th in nation (out of 134 teams) and also placed 3rd in agility.

  • Officer Russ Garvey and K9 Rico – finished 20th in nation (out of 134 teams).

  • Deputy Lisa Daly and K9 Phoenix – placed 41st in nation (out of 134 teams).
